Consult the following training videos to learn how how to use PPE correctly during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.

Contact and droplet:

  • The video notes that the gloves are put on before entering and removed when leaving ‘a room’ (or patient zone) – it is more important to emphasise hand hygiene when indicated by the 5 moments, which is mentioned later in the video.
  • Given the ongoing use of gloves during contact precautions, being implicated in transmission between body sites on the same patient the later recommendation was that gloves be worn as done for standard precautions i.e.  when there is a risk of blood and body fluid contamination.

AGP:

  • This term is used so broadly and is interpreted in different ways.
  • In the context of a true AGP with risk of exposure due to mechanical force or actions which may cause vomiting, expulsion of secretions or bleeding, then the use of a gown as well as other items would be suitable as shown in the video.

Universal mask and face shield:

  • Shield may not be obligatory in all settings dependant on the surge and area the person is working in, but this is not a problem in this context.
