Emergency Centre frequently asked questions
Mediclinic understands that a visit to our Emergency Centre may be an emotional experience, as you or a loved one requires urgent medical care. To ensure that each patient receives the most appropriate care at the most appropriate time, Mediclinic applies strict triage criteria to assess and prioritise care for those in the Emergency Centre.
How do I know what Specialist Doctor I need to see?
We recommend first seeing your local GP (General Practitioner) who will then be able to give appropriate guidance as well as refer you to the correct Specialist Doctor.
How do I know if my Medical Aid will cover my hospital visit?
Please familiarise yourself with your medical scheme's/insurer's benefits and available funds before admission. If necessary, please contact your medical aid/insurer directly to confirm.
Why should I not eat or drink before my surgical procedure?
Rules about when to stop eating and drinking are created to keep patients safe! It is very important for every patient to have an empty stomach before any surgery or procedure that requires anaesthesia, for two reasons: To prevent nausea and to keep any food or liquid from getting into the lungs.
When will I be allowed to have visitors?
Mediclinic offers flexible visiting hours (09:00 - 20:00), with a resting period between 13:00-15:00; however, there may be times when visitors cannot be accommodated. Visitors may be asked to leave the bedside when doctors share diagnoses with patients or when procedures are carried out in the unit; we appreciate your understanding in this regard.
Please refer to our Visitor Information section for further detail on visitors.
Is there free WiFi in Mediclinic hospitals?
Yes, there is! Mediclinic offers free WiFi access at our hospitals. To get connected, scan the QR code in hospital to connect to the MCHID network. You will then be asked to sign in with your cell phone number, followed by an OTP sent via SMS, which will serve as your password. This account can be used for up to three devices and up to a period of 21 days before re-registration is required. For further information, please contact 0861 HCWIFI (429434).
How many patients share a room, and can I request a private room?
At most hospitals the rooms in general units have two to four beds with a shared bathroom. For your convenience, some of our hospitals can accommodate patients in semi-private, private, VIP and luxury rooms.
These room types are available on request for an additional fee and are based on availability at the time of admission.
Please note: Any additional fees for private or semi-private rooms will be for the patient's own account, unless pre-authorised by your medical scheme. Please enquire at reception or the administration department for the applicable fees.
May I stay overnight with my child at the hospital?
Most of our hospitals can accommodate one parent/caregiver who stays with a child on a single sleeper couch. Kindly enquire about these facilities and additional costs, where relevant, at the hospital.
I have special dietary requirements; can I be accommodated?
All hospital meals are provided in accordance with a patient’s health requirements, and meals are determined in conjunction with a certified dietitian.
Most Mediclinic hospitals can provide special meals, e.g. kosher and halaal. If you would like to request a special meal, please do so during your pre-admission or upon admission at the hospital and confirm this with the nursing staff in the unit.
Please note: Special meals attract a surcharge as these meals are specially ordered from one of our pre-approved local suppliers. Please enquire at the hospital about the surcharge.
What is the “fine print” for which I will need to sign for and consent to on admission to hospital?
You will be required to sign the Conditions for Admission, as well as indicate your consent preferences. You are welcome to pre-read these conditions and consent clauses here.
Will I be able to safely store valuables while in hospital?
Any valuables are stored at your own risk. Please note that most hospitals do provide small lockable storage cupboards. Kindly declare any valuables (such as glasses, hearing aids, etc.) to the attending nurse.
You may want to leave valuables such as jewellery, wallets, watches and tablets at home.
Please note: Firearms are not permitted at our facilities and we cannot safely store these on your behalf.
What financing options are available for private-paying patients?
We believe that some of our patients may elect to pay privately for their medical procedures over a period of time. To this end, Mediclinic has engaged reputable finance organisations that are available to provide financing to prospective patients relating to their medical care. With their convenient payment plans, simple online application processes and quick decisions, anyone can schedule his or her procedure and pay for it over time. Financing can be provided for both the hospital costs, as well as the doctor’s and other costs related to the procedure or surgery.
Please visit our Financing Options page for further details.
