The new Mediclinic Vergelegen Day Clinic provides an accessible, efficient and affordable option in the greater Cape Winelands area for patients having elective surgery.
The new Mediclinic Vergelegen Day Clinic is now ready to bring accessible, efficient care to the Winelands community. It’s conveniently co-located alongside the main hospital, bringing its range of services into the fold of a high-quality spectrum of care.
Sister Marike Nunes, Unit Manager, explains how patients benefit from accessing a day clinic instead of the main Mediclinic Vergelegen hospital: “As we do staggered admissions, patients come in one by one and receive very personalised attention.”
In addition, day clinics have limited waiting times. “We offer same-day surgery and patients are admitted and discharged on the same day,” Sister Nunes explains.
“Patients arrive an hour before their scheduled procedure and are admitted to a ward where our friendly staff prepare for them surgery. The doctor then does the pre-op visit and ensures the patient is ready and prepared before they’re wheeled into theatre. As everything happens in one unit, delays are minimised. Within two hours of the procedure, if the patient is fit and healthy and there are no complications, they’re discharged. A day clinic procedure takes only a few hours, in contrast to the full day they may require in the main hospital.”
General surgeon Dr Riaan Beyers adds that patient satisfaction is the central focus. “Apart from the personalised environment at Mediclinic Vergelegen Day Clinic, it’s unique in that it’s attached to the main hospital. So if surgeons run into complications with a patient, we’re able to access other specialists or admit the patient to the main facility, as it’s literally on site. At other day hospitals, you need to organise an ambulance transfer to the bigger facility, which is not time-efficient.”
Mediclinic Vergelegen Day Clinic has one theatre and offers general and orthopaedic surgery, plus gynaecology, urology, ENT, maxillofacial and dental procedures.
