Dr Howard Ross Wain

He is focusing particularly on trauma and burn care, in addition to emergency general surgical conditions.

From a young age, I have always aspired to pursue a career in medicine; no other profession resonated with me as strongly! I completed my undergraduate education in 2010 at the University of the Witwatersrand, after which I was assigned to Pietermaritzburg in KZN to fulfil a two-year internship. In 2013, I was sent to Standerton in Mpumalanga for a year of community service, and in 2014, I returned to Pietermaritzburg with my wife. Since then, I have been practicing in the field of Surgery, achieving my specialization in General Surgery in 2020.

In early 2021, I joined Harry Gwala Regional Hospital (formerly Edendale Hospital) as a Surgical Specialist, where I became deeply involved in the education of interns and surgical trainees. Additionally, I serve as an adjunct lecturer at the University of KwaZulu Natal’s College of Health Sciences, within the Department of Surgery. I have now decided to transition my practice to the private sector.

During my training as a general surgeon, I developed a strong passion for Trauma Surgery, which motivated me to pursue subspecialty training in Trauma Surgery and Trauma Critical Care, successfully completing it in 2025. Since September 2021, I have been actively engaged in a Level 1 Trauma Unit at Netcare St Anne’s Hospital, and I am eager to contribute to its continued development.

Alongside my clinical training, I have a genuine interest in research. My Master of Medicine (MMed) thesis, titled “Analysis of Surgical Adverse Events at a Major University Hospital in South Africa,” was awarded in 2020. Following this, I embarked on a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from 2022 to 2025, culminating in a thesis named “Defining the Role of Error in Adverse Events in a Referral Surgical Department in South Africa.”

VAILABLE TREATMENTS:

Dr Wain has a special interest in managing patients with traumatic injuries, addressing emergency general surgical conditions, and treating burn cases. Furthermore, he offers a range of other emergency and elective surgical care services.

Outside of my professional life, I am fortunate to have a wonderful wife and two young boys who bring joy to my life.
