The multidisciplinary heart team
For patients with severe aortic stenosis, the Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) programme at Mediclinic Panorama Heart Institute offers a life-changing alternative to open-heart surgery. The programme has set the standard for structural heart interventions in South Africa while continuing to raise the bar through rigorous benchmarking, clinical excellence, and a patient-first approach.
The success of the programme has been built on the dedication of a multidisciplinary heart team, including cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, specialised nursing staff, theatre personnel, and support services. Key clinical leaders are Dr Jacques van Wyk, Prof Helmut Weich, and Dr Lou Hofmeyr, who work with the wider TAVI team to ensure every patient receives world-class care.
At the core of the TAVI programme is the team behind it. The TAVI Coordinator acts as a guide for each patient: coordinating their care, keeping communication clear, and making sure the hospital experience runs smoothly from start to finish. After discharge, the team continues to monitor progress, helping ensure every patient recovers well and gets the best possible result.
Achieving the Edwards Benchmark Program certification
In January 2026, Mediclinic Panorama achieved a significant milestone when the TAVI team was formally recognised for successfully completing the Edwards Benchmark Program. The team welcomed international visitors from the Ottawa Heart Institute in Canada, who presented the Benchmark completion certificates. This achievement proved Panorama’s commitment to following proven, evidence-based care throughout the entire TAVI journey.
While receiving the certificate was a proud moment for Mediclinic Panorama, it’s just the beginning. The Benchmark Programme is an ongoing process that constantly evaluates, learns, and improves to ensure every patient gets the best possible care.
