Mediclinic Southern Africa Hackathon

FINDING PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS TO OUR FUTURE CHALLENGES

Our Winning Team

Hackathon winning team

Mediclinic Southern Africa is proud to announce our first annual "Hackathon" winning team. Working together, teams conceptualised and developed innovative solutions to some of the challenges facing our industry.

The winning team included a diverse group of participants who were able to use their individual expertise to support the concept. The winning team now gets the opportunity to pitch against the winning teams from both Mediclinic Middle East and Hirslanden.

Congratulations team Pacemakers! We wish you all of the best with the implementation of your concept and look forward to what this solution will bring.

JOIN US AS WE DISCOVER INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS THROUGH DIVERSE IDEAS

Dear Colleague,

For the first time, Mediclinic Southern Africa (together with our counterparts in Hirslanden and Mediclinic Middle East) will be participating in an interactive brainstorming and workshop event, aimed at developing new solutions and approaches to current business problems. We recognise that this workshop style competition offers tremendous opportunity for all participants across the spectrum of the business, and have adopted the name “hackathon” to speak to our digital and innovative angles that can be applied to accomplish our goals.

I am very excited by this pioneering event and would like to thank you for your application to participate. We anticipate two great days of engagement, mentoring and ideas workshopping to achieve our end goal of developing a solution to our current challenge.

I recognise that you will need to commit yourself fully during these two days, but I believe that the overall experience and outcomes will definitely provide return value for your personal time investment into this competition.

Our confirmation of participants will be sent out as soon as possible after the closing of the applications, and we look forward to engaging with many across our organisation, meeting new people and building new relationships during the process.

Please ensure that you are free to travel to the event before 1 June and that you are fully available during this period to gain maximum benefit from the engagements. Moving forward, winners of the event will further develop and refine the winning concept, with an allocation of time during your normal work responsibilities to advance the concept as a team.

What do I need to know?

A hackathon is an interactive workshop where teams from across Mediclinic develop ideas and practical solutions to a problem facing our business. The goal is to design and present the most innovative solution to the theme laid out and then present a final concept, prototype or presentation to a panel of judges. The topic for 2022 is “How might we create optimal nursing capacity to improve patient care?” and we are inviting YOU, our employees, to register for this two-day initiative and work together to develop ‘out of the box’ solutions to this topic. The hackathon will take place in Stellenbosch, Cape Town on 1-2 June 2022.

By registering, you stand the chance of being selected to participate in the event – in person alongside 59 fellow participants – and enjoy the opportunity to meet and engage with people who are as passionate as you are about innovation. Travel and accommodation arrangements will be made for all participants residing outside of Stellenbosch.

About the Hackathon

Envisioned as an annual event, teams are briefed on a particular challenge that the business is facing. The event will include inspiring sessions on innovation, contextual information around the problem, mentoring sessions with subject matter experts, mentors and executives and so much more.

Solutions will be developed in teams, including a final presentation to a panel of judges, where team submissions are evaluated and assessed on their ‘out of the box’ solution findings. The winners’ solution will then be further refined over a period of time, with the help of mentors and experts, and finally presented to the EXCO of Mediclinic International along with other winning submissions from Hirslanden and Mediclinic Middle East, for possible implementation across the Group.

The winning team will be offered the exposure to further innovative sessions, allowing their ideas to be developed and enhanced – and you could just discover a new career in finding innovative solutions in the business!

  • People who register as individuals are assigned in teams of 4 to 8.
  • People may also register as a team as a minimum of 4 participants and a maximum of 8 participants.
  • Three hackathons will take place between May and June 2022. One per division (Hirslanden, Middle East as well as South Africa).
  • During July to November 2022, the three winning teams of the divisional hackathons (CH, ME, SA) will have the opportunity to further develop and implement their solutions in order to choose the Mediclinic Hackathon winner. The overall winner will be selected after a final presentation in front of the EXCO of Mediclinic International.
  • The participants receive two days off (travel days) Tuesday 31st, and Friday the 3rd. The competition will take place on Wednesday (1st of June) and Thursday (2nd of June). This will be done in support with line managers and executive management.
  • The winning team may spend up to 20% of their working time on the implementation of their idea for the next six months.
