Mediclinic George officially opened its new, purpose-built hospital at a formal event on 20 June 2026, bringing together services from Mediclinic George and Mediclinic Geneva in a modern facility that expands access to specialised care for the growing community.

The event was attended by senior leaders, including Western Cape Premier Alan Winde, Mediclinic Group founder Dr Edwin Hertzog, Group CEO Dr Ronnie van der Merwe, Mediclinic Southern Africa CEO Braam Joubert, Remgro CEO Jannie Durand, and George Executive Mayor Browen Johnson.

Premier Alan Winde highlighted the valuable contribution this facility will make to the community: “The hospital is not only delivering world-class healthcare but also plays a critical role in supporting economic growth, job creation and the long-term development of the Southern Cape as an attractive investment hub.”

According to Dr Ronnie van der Merwe, “The facility was deliberately designed to allow for future expansion as the region continues to grow. We have absolutely no doubt that this will be a huge success, and we trust that we can soon approach the Department of Health of the Western Cape for more beds, so we can further expand the offering.”

The new facility hosts 40 doctors’ rooms, 10 operating theatres and 2 ICU units. A co-located Mediclinic George Day Clinic adds 20 beds, three theatres and a procedure room, providing streamlined care for less complex procedures.

A valuable addition to the hospital is the new Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory, which provides access to advanced diagnostic imaging and minimally invasive interventional treatments for cardiovascular conditions, including coronary artery disease, structural and valvular heart disease, and other complex cardiac conditions.

“We are grateful for the strong support from specialists, GPs, patients, and the broader community since the opening of our new hospital. This response reflects both the trust placed in us and the growing need for expanded healthcare services in the region,” says Celesté Louw, Hospital General Manager at Mediclinic George.

The newly added comprehensive Cardiothoracic Service will enable patients in the Garden Route and broader Southern Cape region to access specialised cardiac and thoracic care closer to home. This includes procedures such as coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG), heart valve repair and replacement, minimally invasive cardiac procedures, and thoracic surgery, as well as the multidisciplinary management of complex heart and lung conditions by an integrated team of cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, anaesthetists, perfusionists, and specialised nursing staff.

“It has been a long journey to get us here. Moving a hospital is a complex undertaking, and maintaining continuity of care throughout is a significant achievement. We are proud of the successful relocation and integration of our services at the new facility. This milestone reflects dedication and teamwork, and marks an important investment in the future of healthcare for the Garden Route. We look forward to continuing to serve our community with excellence, compassion, and innovation,” she concludes.
