Mediclinic Newcastle reports 7 Covid-19 related deaths

Hospital General Manager, Japie Greyling said it is important to note that Covid-19 tends to place increased demand on critical care resources.

Mediclinic Newcastle had 53 Covid-19 patients admitted in its various Covid-19 Wards at noon today.

While the hospital confirmed that it still has capacity, Hospital General Manager, Japie Greyling said it is important to note that Covid-19 tends to place increased demand on critical care resources.

“Hospital bed capacity and the number of patients at a facility remain fluid and changes on a continuous basis. This dynamic situation is continuously monitored across all bed types and across all hospitals to ensure the optimal use of available resources and continuity of patient care,” said Mr Greyling, in response to a media enquiry regarding claims on social media that Mediclinic Newcastle has the second highest number of admissions of Mediclinic hospitals nationwide.

Mediclinic Newcastle further reported a total of seven Covid-related deaths since the start of the pandemic.

“We continue to urge the public to take the necessary precautions and practice social distancing as we are concerned about the non-compliance that is evident in our community and the heightened risk this poses for all,” added Mr Greyling. “We also encourage anyone experiencing symptoms of the disease, such as shortness of breath, fever, sore throat, coughing, or who believe they may have been exposed to the virus, to contact their healthcare provider.”

He concluded, “Mediclinic would like to assure the public that all Covid-19 protocols and measures have been put in place within our hospitals, as indicated by the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) and the World Health Organisation (WHO). Strict infection control measures are being practiced to further manage the risk and prevent the transmission of the virus, ensuring the safety of patients, staff and doctors.”
