Core competencies
Dr Christien Steenkamp is a dedicated general surgeon with a strong clinical foundation and a passion for people. She completed her MBChB in 2009 and has not looked back since.
She completed her internship in the Pietermaritzburg Hospital Complex in 2011, followed by her community service year in Sabie, Mpumalanga. Initially drawn to anaesthetics, she soon found herself captivated by the complexity and impact of surgery, a field that offered immediate, life-changing results for patients.
In 2017, Dr Steenkamp qualified as a specialist surgeon and began her consultant post at Edendale Hospital in Pietermaritzburg, where she not only treated patients but also trained interns and registrars, encouraging surgical curiosity and confidence in future clinicians. After a period in private practice in Newcastle, she returned home to Pietermaritzburg, where she now serves the community at Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg.
Her areas of focus include breast surgery, hernia repairs, thyroid surgery, and a wide range of soft tissue and gastrointestinal conditions. She is especially passionate about breast health and has plans to establish a dedicated breast cancer centre to serve the needs of her community better.
When she is not in theatre or consulting, Dr Steenkamp enjoys gardening, hiking, and playing music. Most of all, she treasures time spent with her husband and young daughter.
