Course Outcomes

This course is a further development of the specialised nurse in the operating theatre. It enables the nurse to provide safe basic and intermediate care to the patient undergoing anaesthesia and during the phase immediately post-anaesthesia. It provides the nurse with appropriate basic and intermediate knowledge and skills concerning specific anaesthetic and recovery skills that they may not be familiar with.

On completion of the course, the student will not be eligible to register at any of the existing professional councils. This course is not credit-bearing.

Course Description

The curriculum is outcomes-based and follows a student-centred approach. The anaesthetic and recovery room short course will give the nurse an understanding of nursing in this specialised field. It covers anatomy and physiology and the applicable skills to provide safe care for a patient in the operating theatre and recovery room.

The mode of instruction is contact. The teaching approach is problem-based and demands self-study with contact, thus adult education methodology is applied. Accompaniment is provided to the student during experiential learning

Documents Required for short course and fundamental courses:

  • Proof of SANC/HPCSA registration
  • Proof of completion of relevant pre-course as per prospectus – (where applicable)
  • Certified copy of ID

Notes:

  • Students to buy their own prescribed books if required
  • If examinations require flights and/or accommodation this is to be covered by the client
  • These prices exclude clinical accompaniment. If a client is unable to provide their own mentors an additional fee will be charged. Mediclinic can only offer accompaniment based on educator capacity
  •  Courses will not be offered if less than 5 students in total enrol on the course. Courses will be cancelled a month prior to starting date and clients will be informed and any applicable fees refunded. 

Admission Requirements

  • Proof of current enrolment with the SANC or Namibian Nursing Board
  • Successful completion of the Anaesthetic and Recovery Room Nursing Fundamental Course
  • Application/motivation or from the Unit Manager and signed by the Nursing Manager
  • 3-6 months of Operating Theatre and Recovery Room experience

Rules and Requirements

  •  A minimum of two formal tests and one assignment will be written. A 50% year mark is required for entry into the exam. An average theory course mark of 50% is required to pass the course. The pass mark of the theoretical examination is 50%. The student must be proved competent in all formative and summative clinical assessments to pass the course. All students will be granted one supplementary theoretical and clinical examination.
  • The allocation of the student for clinical practice by Mediclinic.
  • The student must work at least a 36-hour work workweek student may take one week (7 shifts) leave during the course.
  • The student may not work permanent night duty during the course.
  • No leave will be granted during the course.
  • If all the practical requirements cannot be met in the student’s work setting the student will be placed in an alternative facility in collaboration with the Nursing Manager.
  • Clinical accompaniment is provided by the educator/facilitator, trained mentors, and registered nurses.
  • The student must work in the operating theatre and recovery room unit for a period.
 

The student must:

  • Achieve a practical mark of 70% for all the required clinical assessments
  • Provide evidence of clinical competence
  • Hand in the completed workbook

The successful completion of this course does not qualify the student to register for an additional qualification with the South African Nursing Council. The course is not credit-bearing

Fees and Funding

Mediclinic funds the course for its employees.

The student is responsible for the cost of any prescribed and recommended books. Other institutions requesting Mediclinic provide training for their employees will be invoiced before the commencement of the course.

 

Contract

Mediclinic students will be expected to sign a contract with Mediclinic to work back double the length of the course on successful completion of the course. If the student does not complete the course successfully he/she will be liable for the course costs and an administration fee.

Student information will be shared with legislative bodies and be used for BBBEE purposes.

 

Code of Conduct

All students are subject to the Mediclinic (Pty) Ltd disciplinary code that governs workplace conduct and the grievance procedure.

We have an academic support system in place. The support system includes assisting with study methods as well as assisting students that require professional counselling. There are INCON clinics in the hospitals where students are referred if professional counselling is required. Policies and procedures are in place to deal with student disabilities.
