The Wits University Donald Gordon Medical Centre (WDGMC) is the first private academic hospital in South Africa. It was established when the University of the Witwatersrand purchased the Kenridge Hospital in Parktown with a founding donation from the Donald Gordon Trust. In 2005 Mediclinic Southern Africa became a partner with Wits University and was also awarded the management contract. The hospital was established to create a facility in the private sector for training of sub-specialists. This training programme is part of and complementary to the existing training programmes at The Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, Chris Hani Baragwanath and Helen Joseph hospitals.
