Specialised nursing units
 
Emergency centre
 
The 24-hr emergency centre is constantly manned by a professional, multidisciplinary team who are trained in life-saving techniques and supported by state of the art technology.  Seriously-ill patients will be treated immediately.
 
Epilepsy unit
 
The unit has been established to offer expert diagnosis and care for patients with seizures or related disorders, and treats medically refractory seizure disorders in children and adults.
 
Haematology and bone marrow transplant unit
 
This unit functions as a comprehensive diagnostic and treatment centre for all haematology linked disorders, which provides management of related medical, surgical and oncology problems in a holistic and integrated fashion, with counseling and psychological support where needed.
 
Plasma exchange and apheresis facilities together with an internal laboratory, ensure that state-of-the-art technology and real-time results are available for patient management. An ongoing academic training programme and international links ensure that the treatment programmes offered remain up-to-date, and affordable at medical aid rates. The unit is well integrated with other hospital facilities and radiotherapy services to ensure that adequate backup is available for the management of any disorder.
 
Joint replacement unit

Advice is offered on all aspects of joint replacement surgery, pre-operative assessment, hospital orientation, an introduction to nursing staff, careful in-hospital follow-up and rehabilitation, advice and placement in a step-down facility as well as a 24-hr hip fracture service.
 
Neuroscience unit

A multi-disciplinary team of medical specialists provides a service to patients suffering from a wide variety of neurological disorders, which include;

Medical and surgical management of epilepsy (utilising a dedicated, open-plan epilepsy monitoring (EEG) unit, and Parkinson's disease; cortical mapping for both speech and motor areas of the brain; surgical management of chronic pain; early and effective treatment of acute stroke.
 
A number of years ago, the hospital acquired a "Vector Vision". This sophisticated piece of equipment is used for neuronavigational/computer-aided neurosurgery, enhancing the safety of selected surgical procedures.
 
Oncology unit

The Oncology Unit is a part of the GVI Oncology group run by a network of radiation oncologists. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy is available to patients, as well as emotional support from an oncology social worker.  The equipment and treatment methods used are of international standards, and there is constant liaison between the Oncology Unit and referring doctors within the hospital, and with local general practitioners and community agencies.
