The Wits University Donald Gordon Medical Centre (WDGMC) is the first private academic hospital in South Africa. It was established when the University of the Witwatersrand bought the Kenridge Hospital in Parktown with a founding donation from the Donald Gordon Trust. In 2005 Mediclinic Southern Africa became a partner with Wits University and was also awarded the management contract. The hospital was established to create a facility in the private sector for training of sub-specialists. This training programme is part of and complementary to the existing training programmes at The Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, Chris Hani Baragwanath and Helen Joseph hospitals.

Formal visiting hours however are the following times, as a courtesy to patients who need to rest as much as possible. Exceptions may be made at the discretion of the unit manager or senior nursing practitioner, e.g. for out-of-town patients.
