Medical health tips for cyclists

Update your medical information:

Has your medical information changed since the time of submitting your race entry?

If so, please ensure that your current medical information (including prescription medication) is updated on your cycle tour profile. If the need arises, Medi-Clinic's medical teams, along the route and at their hospitals, will use this information on race day to provide appropriate medical care.

Health screening for cyclists:

If you:

§   are taking chronic medication,

§   have a newly diagnosed or existing medical condition,

§   have sustained a recent, or suffer a recurring injury,

then please visit the Medical Village (Cape Argus Lifecycle Expo:11-13 March) for a free health check. This service will be offered by Medi-Clinic, PathCare and ER24 on the mezzanine level. Simply bring your registration pack along to have your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose checked by a team of professionals.

Medi-Clinic thanks the Medical Village sponsors for their support:

Accucheck, Bluespier & TCM

Roadside medical support:

As the official medical partner to the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour for the past 10 years, Medi-Clinic covers a wide range of expertise under the leadership of Dr Basil Bonner (medical race director) and Geoff Bettison (paramedic). Together, they lead a team of private and public sector services to provide world class field-hospital services and mobile medical support.

The medical team’s infrastructural planning begins about 12 months before the race and involves an extensive medical staff complement including some 70 nurses, 20 doctors and 250 physiotherapists as well as 50 support staff. On race day, Medi-Clinic doctors and nurses will man 15 medical stations along the route, a full medical emergency facility at the finish line, and a team of staff on standby at nearby hospitals to ensure that medical emergencies can be speedily addressed. This operation is also supported by more than 80 emergency medical vehicles including motorbikes, response cars and air ambulances manned by doctors and paramedical staff.

The use of an electronic clinical patient record system allows Medi-Clinic to capture patient events as they occur, enabling real-time decision-making based on accurate clinical data. With 30 IT specialists supporting this intricate system, improved clinical data is provided to underpin planning and management of the Cycle Tour.

All this is done not only to ensure the safety and well-being of the cyclists and spectators, but also to support the Cycle Tour Trust in their worthy endeavours amongst the community and selected charity organisations.
